Hens at Gore Main

Room 8 has been flat out doing their projects for Adventure World... but so have Room 3!  Room 3 have hatched chickens so that Gore Main School can have hens!  The hen house has been build!  Here are the chicks.... they are very popular at Gore Main!

More Science!!

Room 8 have been really enjoying undertaking a range of science experiments.  One of the recent ones that we did was to investigate the effect of weight and force and speed.  We a plastic milk bottle and then filled it with 200,400, 600 and 800 mls of water.  We made predictions about what would happen to the speed of the bottle as we put it down a zip line.  We found out that the bottles would move more quickly down the zip line as the weight became heavier!

Adventure World Inquiry - Decoration Group

Over the past term a group of girls have been working on a variety of decorations what they can put up in Adventure World.  They have painted, nailed and worked extremely hard!  They started off thinking they wanted to make a tyre couch... but this ended up being very difficult to put together so they then turned it into a planter that is now located over by the hen house.  They made a giant wooden tree and it will be nailed onto a post.  The group is currently still adding details to their 'can bird feeders' which will go up into the trees at the beginning of Term 4.  Unfortunately some of the decorations they have made that were in the trees were pulled down by vandals but that has not deterred the group.  Well done decoration group, your work makes Adventure World look great!  Check out the pictures...

Adventure World Inquiry - Obstacle Course Group

Over the past term a group of Room 8 students have been investigating the possibly of having an 'Obstacle Course' located up in Adventure World.  Their learning had to change after they contacted the Gore District Council and found out that they couldn't make any type of fixed playground equipment without a builder's permit due to health and safety guidelines.  They decided to build simple obstacles with materials that could be easily sourced.  They used wood and tyres.  One of their obstacles is a rope net obstacle and they are still working on this.  After they built the obstacle course there were many keen students using it, which was great.  The group painted all of their own obstacles and did all of the manual labor with NO support from adults.  Well done guys!  Here are some pictures...

Adventure World Inquiry - Maze Group

Over the past term a group of girls have been investigating the possibly of having a hedge maze located up in Adventure World.  Their learning took many twists and turns as they realised that they needed money in order to purchase hedge plants as it would take quite a while to grow them from seed.  There were many phone calls and emails to Pukerau Nurseries trying to source the correct type of plants.  The girls organised their own raffle and provided the prizes for it.  They made about $100 from the raffle and the purchased their hedge plants for $95 all up.  They organised where they wanted to plant their maze and the design of it.  The hedge maze is now being protected with tyres as it grows up in size.  Well done girls, your hedge maze is a success!  Here are some pictures!

Adventure World Inquiry - Trench Group

Over the past term a group of boys have been investigating the possibly of having a real 'trench' located up in Adventure World.  Their learning took many twists and turns as they realised that the drainage in Adventure World would cause a problem with pooling water in their trench.  They wrote to a plumber and discovered it would be quite extensive to sort this problem out.  The group came to the realization that a trench on top of the ground would meet the safety requirements needed.  They organised their materials, some dirt to be brought in and then set to work.  Their trench is still very much a work in progress as they happily add new walls, flooring, plants and mounds of turf.  Well done 'Trench Group, you have done well!  Check out the pictures...

Random pics

Here are some random pics from the Room 8 camera...

Pip and Harold

At the end of Term 3 we had a visit from Pip and Harold (Life Education).  They taught Room 8 to be a person who lives ABOVE the line.  A person who lives above the line shows respect and integrity in whatever situation they are in.  Of course sometimes we can lower our own line depending on what circumstances we are in but it is still important that we stay above the line.  If you cross to below the line you are not showing the school values.  We do not want to live BELOW the line.  Here are some photos from Pip and Harold's visit! ;)

More videos from Assembly 16/9/16

Congratulations Room 8, your assembly presentation was sensational!  You really put a lot of time and effort into this performance, writing the script, making props and practicing your delivery.   Here are some videos from the event!

Assembly

Room 8 is on Assembly this week.  Here is a sneak peak at one of the assembly items that will be shown!  Well done to Callum and Baden who made this funny trailer about boredom in Room 8.  Yeah right!

Science - Magnetism

The science experiments have been continuing in Room 8!  We have been learning so much about 'Force' by experimenting.  Our latest experiment was making an electromagnet out of an iron nail.  The nail began by being just being a non-magnetic nail, then we hooked it up to a battery with copper wire and the power from the battery caused the nail to obtain magnetic powers.  After disconnecting the nail from the battery the nail still had some magnetic powers for a while.  We also rubbed magnets onto the iron nails and the magnetic properties transferred onto the nail to make it magnetic!  Amazing!  One of the most important things about experimenting in science is allowing for children to make discoveries and to try many different things.  This is how solutions are found for things and it is one of the most important things teachers can let there students do in today's every-changing world.  Here are some of our videos.

Talent Quest 2016

Well done to the girls from Room 8 who participated in the Gore Main Talent Quest.  Great job girls.  Here are the videos.

Science!

We have been learning about FORCE in Room 8.  We now know that FORCE is a push or a pull.  There are 2 types of force.  These are CONTACT force (where things touch each other to cause movement) or NON CONTACT force (where things don't need to touch to cause movement) such as gravity and magnets.

We have been experimenting with different products to learn more and form ideas about FORCE.  We played with marbles and realised that the bigger the push the faster the marbles move.  The marbles slow down on the carpet because of the friction of the carpet and the marble rubbing against the carpet.  Marbles roll further on paper because there is less friction or rubbing between the marble and paper.

Today we undertook a balloon and string experiment where we were trying to get a straw to move across a rope with no contact from us.  We did this by blowing up a balloon and using the air pressure that comes out as it deflates to move the straw.  We tried lots of different things and gained a clearer understanding of NON CONTACT FORCE.

Here are some photos and videos.

We used a range of products to test how we could make marbles move and stop.

Experimenting with Apps

We have a new iPad in Room 8 and it is always exciting experimenting with new apps and technology.  Recently the boys in the class found an app that turned photos into sketches!  Here are a couple of pics they took!

A visit from Mr Currie

Recently we had a visit from Mr Currie and his guide dog.  Mr Currie is has been blind for a very long time.  He was not born blind but an eye problem caused him to go blind when he was a young man.  A student in our class, Talia,  had written a speech about what it would like to be blind and she had asked Mr Currie questions as part of the research for her speech.  It was so great to have Talia present her speech in front of the class and in front of Mr Currie, especially because much of the speech involved Mr Currie and his stories.  It was really brilliant having Mr Currie come into the class and answer all of our questions about blindness.  Here are some pictures.  It was really a GREAT experience!
